Medical MOS retention board

THIS INFORMATION SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED AS LEGAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER THE BENEFITS OF CONSULTING WITH A TRAINED LEGAL PROFESSIONAL

Often the question is what role does the Medical MOS Retention Board (MMRB) play in the MEB/PEB process.

Soldiers (AD or USAR/ARNG) who meet retention standards but have at least a 3 or 4 PULHES serial will be referred to a MMRB in accordance with AR 600-60, unless waived by the MMRB convening authority.

The Physical Performance Evaluation System (PPES) is designed to evaluate Soldiers with a permanent numerical designator of 3 or 4  in one of the profile serial factors based on their physical ability to perform their duties in a worldwide field or austere environment and recorded on a DA Form 3349.  The PPES establishes the MMRB as an administrative screening board to make this evaluation.  The MMRB recommendations will only be based on an enlisted Soldier’s or Warrant Officer’s physical ability to reasonably perform the duties of his or her primary MOS or of an officer’s ability to perform in his or her branch or area of concentration or functional area.

Once referred to the MMRB, direct observation, evaluation, application of physical standards and the standards found in AR 600-60 will determine MMRB recommendations.  The MMRB recommendations are limited to one of the actions listed below:

  • retain solider in PMOS or branch/specialty code

  • recommend reclassification

  • place in probationary status

  • refer to MEB/PEB or medical disqualification (Medical discharge is not an authorized recommendation)
